Okay. This is easily one of my favourite comics just now. I hadn't been picking it up until a friend recommended it, so I grabbed the first 3 issues and I was immediately hooked. Nova is basically everything I want in a comic. Epic sci-fi action, great characters, a splash of that unique Marvel humour, and connections to another firm favourite of mine, Guardians of The Galaxy.
I'm dispensing with my usual full plot spoilers here, because I just want everyone to go out and read this, but it's basically an origin story that sees Sam Alexander finding out his dad was in the Nova Corps, becoming a Nova himself, and saving the world from the Chitauri, albeit sort of accidentally.
I wasn't overly familiar with Nova as a character, and having done a bit of homework, I am aware that Sam has only been the guy in the helmet since 2011, but this is a great introduction to a really cool character. On top of that, Nova is a very, very pretty book. Ed Mcguiness' art here is absolutely brilliant throughout this first arc. He seems to have a knack of making every panel feel like it could be a two-page spread, and with Sam space-jumping all over the place, it's a talent that really adds to the sense of scale this book requires. We're 5 issues in and I hope he's on art duties on this title for a long time yet.
Sam Alexander is a 15 year old kid, so sometimes Jeph Loeb's dialogue seems a little unnatural (he's 50 or something), but for the most part, the writing is really sharp, and the pacing of this story is great, with each issue picking up just seconds after the previous one left off.
Nova is yet another must buy on my ever expanding pull-list. I was trying to save some cash by dropping a couple of Avengers titles, but this has quite easily muscled it's way in.
