J.J. Jedi, or J.J. Binks?

As I write this post, the internet as abuzz with reports that J.J. Abrams will be directing Star Wars Episode VII. So far, there has been no announcement from Disney, and no confirmation from any official sources, but the news appears to be spreading fast enough that I'm thinking it must be true. So what do I think?

Well, I'm kind of 'meh'. I'm not one of the haters who will undoubtedly use the fact that he wrote the festival of poo that was Armageddon as ammunition to cut him down. On the contrary, I look forward to seeing what he does with Star Wars, but I wanted to feel a real sense of excitement when the director was announced. Instead, I just feel that Abrams is kind of a safe bet. He's already proven he can take on major movie franchises and do them well with Star Trek, and the Mission Impossible films he was involved in were arguably the best of the bunch. He has also done tons of sci-fi on TV with shows like Alias, Fringe, and of course, Lost (can I class that as sci-fi?), though not necessarily in the director's chair.

So yeah, I think he's a safe bet. Having said that, I will freely admit that I personally wanted the super-safe bet that is Mr. Spielberg to make Star Wars, but we knew months ago that wasn't going to happen. I also would have loved for Guillermo Del Toro to have a crack at it.

Overall though, the news is pretty good for Star Wars fans. Abrams is entirely capable of pulling this off, and screenwriter Michael Arndt's track record is pretty damn good (if a little short). All we need now is Warwick Davis in a gold bikini and we'll be on to a real winner!

And X-wings. Always X-wings.
