Credit Where It's Due: James Tynion IV

When DC's 'man of the moment' Scott Snyder hand picked his former student James Tynion IV to script the backup stories in Batman, he must have been at least a little aware of the gift he was giving to the industry.

Aside from Tynion writing the Batman backups, he and Snyder now co-write the stories for the very promising Talon (a character that Tynion conceived), so at the moment it's almost impossible to talk about him without mentioning his mentor. DC clearly recognise talent when they see it though, and the relative newcomer has quickly become one to watch.

It's fair to say that to be given your own Gotham-based book starring a title character you created is probably quite daunting, but this April, Tynion will also take over writing duties on Red Hood and The Outlaws. It's a book that some would say is getting a little stale, and if there is anyone who can breathe life into it, I'll happily put money on James Tynion IV. Talon is shaping up to be a really great book, and he's already cut his teeth writing backups in what is arguably the best Batman book to hit stands in quite a long time.

He's young, he's fresh, and he's probably still got tons of ideas. Of course, writing two 'Gotham books' means we might see his name banded about with Scott Snyder's for a while yet, but James Tynion IV is clearly a talent in his own right, and is already well on the way to becoming a heavy hitter for DC.
